TL;DR (2-minute read)
- Microsoft faced a security vulnerability called PrintNightmare with their PrintSpooler system, and the cybersecurity company, Sangfor, accidentally leaked instructions to exploit the breach.
- Sangfor deleted these instructions but before they deleted them, the instructions were posted all over the internet, leaving many Microsoft systems vulnerable to hackers viewing their personal data and causing other serious damages.
- Fortunately, Microsoft has posted security patches which users can download to ensure protection from the breach.
- To download this Microsoft security update, “Windows users can visit the Settings page, then select the Update & Security option, followed by Windows Update, or else visit the Microsoft website to download the new software” (Microsoft Support).
1: What is breaching many Microsoft operating systems?
Recently, a security breach known as PrintNightmare has breached the Windows PrintSpooler service. The PrintSpooler service is a Microsoft service responsible for all the print jobs being sent to the computer or print server. Unfortunately, researchers at the cybersecurity company, Sangfor, accidentally put out instructions on how to exploit and breach the PrintSpooler service. They immediately deleted the instructions but it was too little too late as it was published all over the internet. With these instructions public, all Microsoft computers are vulnerable to hackers entering and exploiting this breach to install dangerous programs, delete and save personal data, and create unwanted user accounts. Hackers have a very large radius of access to many Microsoft operating systems and can cause serious damages to users. This breach affects not only the current Windows 11 and 10 operating systems but also the Windows 7 operating system even though Microsoft stopped updating Windows 7 starting last year.
2: How can you fix this to ensure no security risks or breaches?
Fortunately, Microsoft has posted updates for each of its operating systems, including Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, and other versions as well. In addition, patches are expected for Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2012, and Windows 1607 soon.
Microsoft announced, “ We recommend that you install these updates immediately,”.
To download this Microsoft security update, “Windows users can visit the Settings page, then select the Update & Security option, followed by Windows Update, or else visit the Microsoft website to download the new software” (Microsoft Support).
With over 1.3 billion Windows 10 users combined with the older users of Windows 7 and 8 and other smaller systems, this security breach is a huge deal. Hackers have near full access to many of these operating systems through the PrintNightmare security breach, so to combat this please download the security updates provided by Microsoft to ensure protection from dangerous breaches and hackers.
